BHS boys’ soccer win two, 11th straight

The Bainbridge High School boys’ soccer team improved their overall record to 11-1 and their Sub-Region mark to 4-0 with victories this past Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, they defeated the Lee County High School Trojans 4-2 in a Sub-Region contest in Leesburg and on Saturday they defeated the Worth County High School Rams 8-0 at Centennial Field.

The two weekend wins were the 10th and 11th in a row by the Bearcats. It has been an historic season for the Bearcats, who swept both Sub-Region games with the Trojans and Thomas County Central High School Yellow Jackets and earned a number one Sub Region seed for the first time ever.

The date and opponent of their first Region 1AAAA playoff game are to be announced.

On Friday, the Trojans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute, following a mad scramble for the ball inside the Bearcats’ penalty area.

The Bearcats tied it 1-1 in the 29th minute when senior midfielder Hal Clement got on the end of freshman midfielder Louis Mejia’s corner kick and headed the ball into the center of the goal.

Clement took a through ball after beating the Trojans’ back line and put a low hard shot on goal in the 41st minute, putting the Bearcats ahead 2-1.

The Bearcats increased their lead to 3-1 in the 45th minute when senior midfielder Bryan Ordonez took a pass from Clement and beat the Trojans’ defense from his right midfield position on a breakaway shot to the back of the net.

The Trojans cut the Bearcats lead to 3-2 in the 66th minute when a ball was centered up at the top of the 18 yard penalty area to an uncovered Trojans forward, who shot the ball into the lower left corner of the goal.

The Bearcats added their fourth goal with just 2.9 seconds remaining in the game when Juan Mejia took a corner kick from the right flag that sailed over the goal keeper’s head and ricocheted off the back post and into the goal as the final horn blew.

In their Saturday 8-0 home victory over the Worth County Rams, the Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when sophomore midfielder Paul Soden took an assist from Ordonez from the right side and finished right in front of the goal.

Two minutes later, freshman midfielder Daniel Provence increased the Bearcats lead to 2-0 when he took the rebound of a Mejia shot and put the ball in the back of the net.

In the 27th minute, Clement took a ball that was centered to the top of the penalty area and drove home a goal to extend the lead to 3-0.

The advantage moved to 4-0 when senior forward Alex Benjarano took a through ball from Provence and drove home a goal.

In the 35th minute, Ordonez took a pass from Benjarano and finished with a first time shot on goal, putting the Bearcats out front 5-0.

The final goal of the first half, which put the Bearcats up 6-0, came in the 38th minute when Ordonez got to a loose ball in front of the Rams’ net and drove it into the goal.

The Bearcats seventh goal came in the 55th minute when Mejia took a crossing pass from midfielder Miguel Barron and followed with a hard shot on goal.

The final Bearcats goal came in the 57th minute when  Clement finished a shot from about 20 yards away after receiving a pass from Provence.
