Remember Goliad

I was amaized while looking through my sesquecentenial of Decatur County 1823 to 1973 to see that James W. Fannin of Bainbridge and two other Georgians were executed at Goliad in 1836.

Mr. Fannin went to Texas and raised a small army, 350 men and were catured under a flag of truce. When Sam Housten whipped Sana-Ana at San Jacinto, the Battle Cry was, “Remember the Alamo” and “Remember Goliad.”

One man reported he caught 2,650 crappie in four day per week, two hours per day. He doesn’t keep them, he picks out what he likes to eat and releases the rest to swim off.

This scribler questions the logic of the gov-mint in there burning off of the islands in the manner that they did it. Turkeys are already on the nest, there are four Bald Eagle’s nests known in the area. The fire was so hot and fast, deer had to get in the water and swim to get away from it.

Some folks from Fargo, Ga., spent four days fishen and took bass each day but the last day. They took an 8, 7 and 3 at 5.  They only had five bites.

Bowen Brown, 7 years old, took a 3 1/2-pound bass at the ramp at Wingate’s while waiting for his PaPa to launch the boat. He just had his toenails done.

Eddie Ditto won the Big Bend Bass Club’s tournament with 17 1/2 pounds of bass.

Jerry Jones and his son took two limits up to 4 1/2 pounds. Jerry and Vickie are from Ohio and come and stay five or six weeks each year.

Chris Blair and Kevin Allen of Newnan, Ga., had two limits of bass using crank baits and Flippen Flukes.

Once a great man sed, “It is better to raise strong children than to repair broken men.”
