Suzanne Brandt, executive director of the Decatur County Keep America Beautiful (KAB) program, told the Bainbridge Lions Club Wednesday that the club and her program have much in common.

“Your mission is very much like ours,” she said. “Our county is what we make it, and we are both striving to make it better.”

Brandt said when she found out she was going to speak to the Lions Club, she started reading about the organization.

“I know that when Lions get involved, problems become smaller. I know that your major projects help the blind, and that in 1925 Helen Keller challenged the Lions to be Knights of the Blind,” Brandt said. “You, like us, are interested in the welfare of the people and landscape of Bainbridge and Decatur County.”

Brandt said that many of the volunteers in the local Keep America Beautiful program are teenagers.

“The week before last, the Bainbridge High School Air Force Junior ROTC cadets picked up 57 bags of trash,” she said.

Enforcement, education and eradication are the three goals of the KAB program.

“There is an adopt-a-highway program that is operated by the state. I can help you with the forms if you would like to get involved in it,” Brandt said. “A sign would be put up letting everyone know that a particular stretch of highway is adopted by your club. What you would have to do is clean up one mile of state road four times a year.”
