Mary Prevatte Wells

Funeral services for Mary Prevatte Wells, 90, will be Friday, Jan. 21, at Sutton Chapel United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Lynn Roberts officiating.

Visitation will be at the church at 1 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Vada.

Mrs. Wells was born July 23, 1920, in Decatur County and died Jan. 17, 2011, at her home in Vada, the same house in which she was born.

She spent her life caring for her family and the community of Vada. She was a devoted wife and homemaker, a retired secretary of the Pelham Elementary School, and an active member of Sutton Chapel United Methodist Church. Known for her delicious recipes and hospitality, Mrs. Wells’ life was one of love for others, steadfast faith to stand for right, and gratitude for the simple things.

Mrs. Wells was the daughter of the late Crawford James Prevatte Sr. and the late Mary Magdalene Yates Prevatte. Also preceding her in death were her husband, Ralph Wells; two sisters, Alma P. Scott and Dorothy P. Culbreth Viola, both of Albany; two brothers, Crawford James Prevatte Jr. of Bainbridge and Wilson Yates Prevatte of Thomasville.

Survivors include daughters, Jan W. Shirah and her husband, Louie, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., and Judy W. Landau and her husband, Bill, of Albany; three grandchildren, Cleve Shirah of Atlanta, Cecile Shirah of Ponte Vedra, Fla., and Baylor W. Keese and his wife, Katy, of Watkinsville, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, McKenzie Keese and Cadence Keese of Watkinsville; one sister: Louise P. Ashton of Albany; many beloved nephews and nieces as well as two devoted caregivers, Georgia Jones of Bainbridge and Ethel Clark of Vada.
