Smallwood to discuss Attapulgus history

Fredrick Smallwood will discuss the history of his hometown, Attapulgus, when the Decatur County Historical and Genealogical Society meets Monday, Jan. 10.

The event at The Charter House Inn begins with a wine social half hour at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner, business meeting and program.

New President Larry Nichols will preside, and will discuss a series of programs on this year’s agenda, discussing the historical roots of Decatur County communities. The list begins with Attapulgus.

The program also includes a report by Shirley Fleming on Genealogical Society activities. In addition to having family roots in Attapulgus, Smallwood also has written a book on his service in the Army during World War II.

New officers for the coming year include Larry Nichols, president; Carel Lewis, vice president; Kathryn Lillethun, secretary; and J.B. Swicord, treasurer.

Board members include Chuck Lewis, Jim Smith, Carolyn Barbree, Chuck Lynn, Edwin Duke, Clayton Penhallegon, Shirley Fleming and Jim Gisondi.
