Alte wins Swine Time Run

Caleb Alte, a native of Orlando, Fla. outran a 96-runner field Saturday in Climax to win the 29th annual 5,000 meter, 3.1 mile Swine Time Festival Run.

Alte, a student at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla., finished in a time of 19 minutes, 15 seconds.

The top female finisher was Annie Beauchamp Gargasz of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Bainbridge. Gargasz, a pharmacist at Tampa General Hospital, finished in a time of 28 minutes, 26 seconds.

The Swine Time Run was dedicated to two Climax veterans who passed away in 2009-2010: retired U.S. Army Colonel Doyce Ariail and World War II U.S. Army veteran Clifford Wells. Each of their names were on a sleeve of the Swine Time Run shirts.

Alte and Gargasz, who was 31st overall, agreed that the course, which had a fairly steep hill coming back, was challenging.

The top Decatur County finisher was Greg Waddell, who was second overall and first in the 40-to-49-year-old age division in a time of 19 minutes, 21seconds.

Finishers behind Alte and Waddell in the male division included Douglas Griffin, who was fourth overall and first in the 20-to-29-year-old division in a time of 21 minutes, 35 seconds; Jay Herring, who was fifth overall and first in the 50-to-59-year-old division in a time of 21 minutes, 41 seconds and David Shillcut, who was ninth overall and first in the 30-to-39-year-old division in a time of 23 minutes, 4 seconds; and Eric Conner, who was 17th overall and first in the 13-and under division in a time of 25 minutes, 53 seconds.

Finishers behind Garbasz in the female division included Maria Lambert, who was first in the 13-and under division and 35th overall in a time of 29 minutes, 1 second, Teresa Tess Lambert, who was first in the 40-to-49-year-old division and 40th overall in a time of 29 minutes, 50 seconds, and Marjorie Mayfield, who was first in the 50-to-59-year-old division and 41st overall in a time of 30 minutes, 8 seconds.
