Funeral services for Darrel A. McBride, 48, of Bainbridge, were held Saturday, Jan. 9, at Popular Springs Missionary Baptist Church in Whigham, Ga., with the Rev. Ricky Thompson officiating.

Interment followed in the cemetery of Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church near Climax, Ga., with full military honors and escorts serving as active pallbearers.

Born June 13, 1960, in Bainbridge, Mr. McBride died on Jan. 5, 2010, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Lake City, Fla.

Mr. McBride graduated from Boys Catholic High School in Philadelphia, Pa. He was a retired sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. During his lifetime, he also worked as a correctional officer in Pelham, Ga., as a commercial professional truck driver and a driver for Greyhound Bus Lines.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Patrick V. Barnwell; and his grandmother, Mrs. Mary “Gammie” Gaines.

Survivors include his parents, Peter Barnwell and Verna P. McBride Barnwell of Bainbridge; a sister, Joy F. Gilbert of Atlanta, Ga.; a special aunt, Christine B. Patterson of Bainbridge; three special cousins, Cora Lee, Lizzie Mae and Alice McGill, all of Bainbridge; three nephews, a nieces, as well as a host of other family and friends.

Jacobs Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
