Matthew Fountain

Funeral services for Matthew Middleton Fountain, 87, of Bainbridge, were held Saturday, Dec. 12, at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Cleveland Sanders officiating.

Interment followed in Jonas Lobe Cemetery with Alfred Fountain, William Fountain, John Harris, Willie Moore, Kenneth Sheffield and Luther James Sheffield serving as active pallbearers.

Born March 13, 1922, in Decatur County, Mr. Fountain died on Dec. 6, 2009, in Augusta, Ga.

Mr. Fountain attended school in Decatur County until the seventh grade, after which he left school to help his family on the farm. He joined Mount Zion M.B. Church in the Cyrene community at a young age and was an active member throughout his life. He was a U.S. Armed Forces veteran of World War II and worked as a master welder at Englehard Minerals and Chemical. He was a member of the NAACP, the Civic and Progressive League and American Legion Post No. 502.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Anthony Fountain.

Survivors include his wife, Beulah Gadson Fountain; a daughter, Linda Johnson of Augusta, Ga.; three sisters-in-law, three grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Bruton Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
