Funeral services for J. Carey Heard, 53, of Bainbridge, was held Monday, Nov. 30, at Morningside Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Johns and Carl Harrell officiating.

Interment followed at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery with Chad Widner, Kenny Blair, Brian Jones, Stephen Jones, Newton Cloud, Johnny Johnson, Joe Conyers, Hank Pumphrey and Bobby Culverson serving as active pallbearers. His nephews served as honorary pallbearers.

Born April 2, 1956, in Bainbridge, Mr. Heard died on Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, at Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Ala.

Mr. Heard was very active in the Boy Scouts of America, having earned the Eagle Scout Award and the God and Country Award. He was a graduate of Bainbridge High School, Class of 1974, played collegiate football at the University of Georgia, and at Florida State University, where he graduated in the Class of 1978. He was a farmer and owner of JCH Contractors Inc. He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Julius C. Heard; and his sister, Susan Deanne Heard.

Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Delores E. Heard of Bainbridge; his daughter, Shannon Heard of Bainbridge; his son, Jace Heard and his wife, Brittney, of Bainbridge; his mother, Betty Sue Grady Heard of Bainbridge; four brothers, Rodney W. Heard and his wife, Lynn; Dale Heard and his wife, Jill; Trent Heard and his wife, April, and Russell L. Heard, all of Bainbridge.

Ivey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
