Two vehicle crashes that caused injuries occurred Thursday morning.

At about 10:30 a.m., BPS officers and other emergency first responders were dispatched to a wreck on Vada Road, just south of its intersection with Ogerita Street. The accident occurred when Leroy West, 82, of 416 Whigham Dairy Road, Bainbridge, failed to stop for a City of Bainbridge yard refuse collection truck, which had stopped in the northbound lane of Vada Road.

West’s Chevrolet S-10 slammed into the rear of the city-owned truck, a GMC 7500, and became wedged underneath the much larger truck.

West’s legs were pinned underneath the dash of his pickup truck, requiring Decatur County Fire and Rescue firefighters to cut open both doors of his truck in order to free him. West suffered two possible broken legs as well as injuries to his chest, hands and face, according to BPS officers at the scene.

Emergency Medical Service personnel treated West at the scene and took him to Memorial Hospital. He was later transported by an emergency medical helicopter to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition as of 12:30 p.m. Friday. The two city workers on the truck were uninjured.

Earlier on Thursday morning, James Massman, 43, of Mountain Grove, Mo., was traveling west on U.S. 84 East when he ran through a red light at the highway’s intersection with College Road. Massman’s truck collided hard with a Ford Fusion sedan driven by Elizabeth Thomas, 16, of 1503 Pineland Drive, Bainbridge, as she was attempting to turn left onto U.S. 84 from Whigham Dairy Road.

Thomas, who was returning to Bainbridge High School from a work apprenticeship, skidded 50 to 60 feet in her car after the impact. She was taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment of her injuries and was later released. Massman was uninjured.
