Funeral services for Dexter Wayne Smith Sr., 45, of Gadsden County, Fla., were held Saturday, Oct. 3, at New St. John A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Ervin Omega Gilliam officiating.

Interment followed at the Smith Estate in Havana, Fla.

Born Oct. 3, 1963, in Syracuse, N.Y., Smith died Sept. 23, 2009, in Jackson County, Fla.

Mr. Smith was employed by the Leon County Department of Mosquito Control. He attended school in Gadsden County, where he graduated with the class of 1981 of Northside High School. He also attended the North Florida Truck Driving School, where he received his truck driving credentials. He studied Christian literature with the Universal Life Church and received his credentials of ministry in 2005.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Marlo Smith.

Survivors include a devoted friend, Lacey Clark; five sons, Dexter Wayne Smith Jr., Jeremy DeWayne Smith, Andrew Lamont Smith, Shauntavian Smith, all of Quincy, Fla., and Dex Marcellous Smith of Tallahassee, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Ciera Barnes and Danielle Diggs; two brothers, Tony Ron Smith of Havana, Fla., and Joe Smith of Tallahassee, Fla.; three sisters, Shirley Smith of Tampa, Fla., Stephanie Smith Scott of Atlanta, Ga., and Joyce Herring of Havana, Fla.; one god-daughter, two grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Bruton Mortuary was in charge of funeral arrangements.
