Jones County’s Terrance Gore ran 20 times for 184 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Greyhounds to a 28-19 win over the Bainbridge High School Bearcats at Centennial Field Friday night.

Jones County scored first when Gore ran four yards for a touchdown with 11:15 left in the second quarter to culminate a 10-play, 46-yard drive. Kicker Zack Suarez kicked the extra point to make it 7-0 in the Greyhounds’ favor. The drive was set up by defensive back Cody Lanford’s interception of Rohan Gaines’ pass at the Bearcats’ 46-yard-line. The key play in the drive was a 13-yard pass from Jones County quarterback Cody Evans to Xavier Watson from the 21 to the 8.

With a little under 5 minutes, Jones County punted and Jeremy Harper fumbled the return and the Greyhounds’ Cameron Thrasher recovered at the Bearcat 46. But the Bearcats’ defense held and forced another Greyhound punt late in the second quarter.

With about 2:00 remaining in the first half, Harper caught a Gaines pass and gained 46 yards, from the Bearcats’ 18 to the Greyhounds 36. James Hudson caught a 12-yard pass from Gaines on fourth down and carried it to the Greyhounds 24. Thomas Smiley ran 18 yards to the 6.

With 33 seconds left, Gaines ran for four yards around the right end for a touchdown, culminating a nine-play, 82-yard drive. The extra point attempt was unsuccessful when Steven Bench, who was holding for kicker Keenan Adams spotted the Greyhounds closing quickly and attempted to run.

With 11:10 left in the third quarter, the Greyhounds fumbled and the Bearcats recovered on the Jones County 40.

On the ensuing drive, Harper ran in six yards for a touchdown with 7:37 left in the third quarter to cap a seven-play, 41-yard drive. Adams’ extra point made it 13-7 in Bainbridge’s favor. Key plays included Hudson catching a 19-yard pass from Gaines to the Greyhounds 21. Harper ran eight yards to the 13 and then rushed twice more before his touchdown run.

Gore ran 28 yards for a Jones County touchdown with 5:17 left in the third quarter to culminate a seven-play, 77-yard drive. Suarez’s extra point made it 14-13 in the Greyhounds’ favor.

With 13 seconds left in the third quarter, Gore ran 11 yards for a touchdown to cap a seven-play, 43-yard drive. Suarez’ extra point made it 21-13 at the end of the third quarter.

Jonathan Warren and Daniel Bivins made a big tackle of Gore in the backfield with about 8:30 left in the fourth quarter, forcing Jones County to punt. The Bearcats then partially blocked the Greyhounds’ punt, getting the ball back at their own 40.

Hudson tipped a pass from Gaines as he jumped to catch it, allowing Jones County to intercept the ball around their 43-yard-line with about 7:30 left in the fourth quarter.

The Greyhounds’ Gore ran in 37 yards for a touchdown with 3:58 left in the fourth quarter to culminate an eight-play, 57-yard drive. Suarez’ extra point made it 28-13.

With the Bearcats facing a fourth down, Harper caught a Gaines pass for a first down. On the next play, Harper caught a 15-yard pass from Gaines for a touchdown with 1:55 left to culminate a nine-play, 66-yard drive. A two-point conversion pass from Gaines to Devonta Johnson was incomplete, leaving the score 28-19.

BHS’ Adams attempted an onside kick, but Jones County fell on the ball at the Bearcats’ 49.

With the loss, Bainbridge falls to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in Region 1AAAA play. The Bearcats will be off next week.
