The Washington Middle School eighth-grade Tigers of Cairo downed the Bainbridge Middle School eighth-grade Bearcats 24-8 Thursday at Centennial Field.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Tigers quarterback Davis Perkins ran an option off the right side for 36 yards and a touchdown at the 7:51 mark of the second quarter, then ran in for the two-point conversion to put the visitors ahead 8-0. That’s the way the first half ended.

The third quarter remained scoreless until the 1:09 mark when Perkins fumbled the ball into the endzone just before crossing the goal line following a hard hit from behind by Bearcats defensive back Brent Noble. Michael Callaway fell on it for a Tiger touchdown. Brason McKenzie ran in for the two-point conversion to put the Tigers ahead 16-0.

The final Tigers touchdown of the day came at the 4:36 mark of the fourth quarter. That’s when Perkins ran off the left side for 10 yards and a touchdown, and McKenzie ran in for the two-point conversion to make it 24-0.

Noble, whose earlier hard hit caused Tiger quarterback Perkins’ fumble into the endzone, brought the home crowd to its feet when he took in the ensuing kickoff at his own 30-yard line, cut to the right, and raced 70 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown.

Quarterback Preston Norris went into the endzone for the two-point conversion on an option run around the right side and with 4:23 left on the clock the final score was on the board.

Bainbridge eighth-grade football coordinator Scott Star said he thought running backs Greg Cooper and Terry Reynolds and Norris all played well on the offensive unit, and Noble and end Corey Durham played well on the defensive unit.

The Bearcats, who are now 1-2 for the season, will return to action next Thursday, Sept. 24, when they take on the Worth County eighth grade Rams at 5 p.m. in Sylvester.
