A female passenger of a vehicle traveling on U.S. 27 South was killed in a single vehicle rollover accident that occurred early Monday morning.

Shortly after 7 a.m., officers from the Georgia State Patrol, Decatur County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the accident, which occurred approximately five miles south of Attapulgus on U.S. 27 South.

The driver of the vehicle, Charles Hunter, 55, of Tallahassee, Fla., fell asleep while driving and went off the west shoulder of the roadway, according to Georgia State Patrol Senior Trooper C. Hall. When he awoke he overcorrected, crossing over the road into the median where the car struck an embankment, causing it to overturn several times, said Hall.

When the vehicle overturned, the passenger, Brenda Fauls, 49, originally of Macomb, Ill., was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by the Decatur County Coroner Peter Bruton.

Hunter suffered only minor injuries and was not taken to the hospital.

Both occupants were wearing seatbelts when the wreck occurred. Fauls was apparently asleep with her seat in a reclined position, which has been attributed with her being ejected from the vehicle, Hall said.

Hunter and Fauls were returning to Tallahassee from Illinois, according to Hall.

Chase ends, driver out of gas

A car chase ended after less than one minute when a driver fleeing from police ran out of gasoline.

On Sunday, a Bainbridge Public Safety officer attempted to stop a vehicle, driven by Patrick Bernard Tarver, 21, of 424 N. Sims St., traveling recklessly on the wrong side of the street.

Tarver layed drag as he turned onto North Sims Street.

According to incident reports, while in pursuit, an officer witnessed Tarver drive through a red light as he crossed over MLK Jr. Drive. He then skidded through a stop sign at the end of Sims Street as he pulled onto Vada Road. The chase quickly came to an end when Tarver’s vehicle ran out of gasoline near the intersection of Vada and Loblolly roads.

According to the E-911 the approximately 1.5-mile chase took less than one minute, as was noted in the report.

Tarver was arrested and charged with aggressive driving, failure to stop for a stop sign, fleeing and attempting to elude and running a red light.

Wreck occurs on Dothan Road

A passenger vehicle traveling toward Bainbridge on Dothan Road struck the rear of a large freight truck Monday afternoon, leaving the car wedged beneath the truck.

At approximately 12:30 p.m. the driver of a newer model Chevrolet Impala, Steven Koelbel of Tallahassee, Fla., ran into the back of a Genpro Trucking Corp. freight truck that had pulled out from the Old Bainbridge Truck Stop traveling east on Dothan Road.

The truck driver, Ronald Lurry, said he had driven approximately 150 feet from the truck stop on Dothan Road when the car struck his truck.

Decatur County Fire and Rescue workers were forced to use machinery to help a local towing company remove the vehicle from the back of the truck.

Neither drivers were seriously injured and did not request to be taken to the hospital.

Koelbel was issued a citation for following too closely, according to Georgia State Patrol (GSP) Trooper Brian Palmer.

GSP, Emergency Medical Services, Decatur County Sheriff’s deputies and Fire and Rescue responded to the accident.
