God’s grace

May 14 was one of the most terrifying days of our lives.

My dad, Leon Brogdon, works for the City of Bainbridge in the street department. He was working at the land fill running the chipper, as he often does. But that was no ordinary day. My dad was cleaning the chipper up, as he often does, and he noticed a piece of plastic was about to go through the chipper. He reached to grab the piece of plastic to keep it from chipping up on the ground and when he did, the rotating wheel fell on his hand. This wheel weighed 800 to 1,000 pounds.

When the wheel fell, his hand was caught under the wheel. By the grace of God he had the remote in his hand to lift the wheel and the sense enough to use the remote in this situation.

He lifted the wheel and began to pray and get very, very weak. He began to wonder what he would do. He was out there alone and did not have the strength to climb up in the tractor to call for help.

By God’s wonderful mercy, David Jackson drove up on the county’s dump truck, and he stopped when he saw my dad pacing back and forth holding his hand. He immediately called 911 for help.

My dad began to get weaker and laid down on the ground. Mr. Jackson got the water he had in his cooler and kept his face wiped to keep him awake and held his head out of the dirt.

I believe God put Mr. Jackson in my dad’s path that day.

Even though we live in a very small town, that day the EMS responded in a way I never imagined. Dr. Alan Wilson was the surgeon that responded. He heard the accident on the scanner and responded by going to the field where he was.

I want Mr. Jackson to know what a blessing he is to our family, and we will never forget what he did for my dad.

I have always been told growing up that God’s grace is sufficient and this just drove that home. Again, David Jackson is one of the biggest blessings in our life. Thank you so much for everything you did and you will always have a special place in our hearts.
