Track teams begin strong

Denzel Gamble received the best performance trophy Saturday, highlighting an outstanding day for the Bainbridge High School Bearcats and Lady Cats track teams in Tallahassee.

Coach Larry Cosby’s Bearcats finished second in a 19-team boys field, and coach Tandria Phillips’ Lady Cats finished third in an 18-team girls field at the Jesse Forbes Invitational at Godby High School.

Gamble earning the best performer award marked the third consecutive year a Bearcat performer had won the award at the Godby meet. Former Bearcat Anthony Riley captured the award in 2007 and 2008.

Gamble won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.95, finished second in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 42.03, and was second in the triple jump with a leap of 44 feet, 1 inch.

Denzel Reynolds, Sean Samuel, Brandon Handsford and Eric Henry captured second in the 4-by-100-meter relay in a time of 42.78.

Samuel was third in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.76, Reynolds was fourth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.33 and Henry was eighth in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.56.

Donte Milline, Titus Madge, Ryan Edwards and Dylan Thomas finished eighth in the 4-by-800-meter relay in a time of 9:51.47 and Ben Mitchell, Rryan Edwards, Octavious Scott and Martin Redding finished eighth in the 4-by-400-meter relay in a time of 3:45.81.

The Lady Cats were led by their 4-by-100-meter relay team of Devena Thomas, Jerisha Sutton, Olivia Beard and Nancy Session who sprinted home first in a time of 50.19.

Second places were captured by Session with a 1:01.05 400-meter run time and a 26.21 200-meter run time.

Sutton was third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.65 and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.12. Thomas was third in the high jump, clearing the bar at a height of 4 feet, 8 inches and Beard was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.51.

Jerica Richardson was seventh in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 52.37.

In boys field events, Delonte Martistee took first in the triple jump with a leap of 44 feet, 9 inches and fourth in the high jump, clearing the bar at a height of 6 feet, 2 inches and Jamar Cosby took third in the high jump, clearing the bar at a height of 6 feet, 4 inches.

Dontavious Smith took fifth with a shot put heave of 43 feet, 1 inch. Rohan Gaines was seventh in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 6 inches, Dewayne Gurley was seventh in the discus with a throw of 130 feet, 2 inches and Steve Crowell took seventh with a 42 foot, 2 inch shot put heave.
