In nature’s way, Be my Valentine

As if Mother Nature had a way of wishing them a Happy Valentine’s Day, Sam Dean and his wife of 41 years, Dot, thought the tree limbs’ markings are timely for Saturday.

Mr. Dean said he was cutting some oak trees down about three weeks ago because a neighbor wanted some wood to put into his smoker. As Mr. Dean cut the logs up in about 12-inch lengths, he found a log with an unusual mark growing within its core—a near perfect heart shape.

He put it aside and preceded to cut some more logs when he found another one with an usual marking—that with the shape of a “B” growing within the wood’s core.

“I said, ‘Looky here. How perfect can you get,’” said Mr. Dean, who lives on College Road behind Bainbridge College.

Mr. Dean said he plans to give something else to his wife for Valentine’s Day, but the gift he got from Mother Nature he will keep forever.
