The Georgia 4-H Youth Technology Leadership Team recently conducted a Need-a-Computer Project to benefit 4-H’ers across the state.

Decatur County was fortunate to have two 4-H members reap the rewards of this program by winning computers. The winners selected received refurbished computers from the Georgia 4-H Youth Technology Leadership Team.

Catalina Lucas, a fifth-grade student at Elcan-King Elementary School, and Nicholas Hancock, also a fifth-grader at Potter Street Elementary School, were selected as winners.

Lucas is the daughter of Gilberto Lucas and Catarina Bautista. Hancock is the son of Ben and Stephanie Barlow.

To be eligible to receive the free computers, students completed an application listing their 4-H activities, composed an essay stating their need for a computer, and submitted a reference.

There were 160 applicants from 22 different counties with 50 computers being awarded to 4-H’ers ages 9 to 18.

The applications were judged by a non-biased committee who read each application and ranked them all with priority given to 4-H’ers without a computer at home.

The Decatur County 4-H program offers numerous opportunities for youth ages 9 to 18. Students can select from more than 50 project areas, participate in any of hundreds of events, apply for scholarships, and travel around the state and even travel the world.
