If past performance predicts the future, then the mid-1980s through the 1990s foretold the nomination of Darnell Holley as Bainbridge’s Man of the Year. (Holley was named Man of the Year Thursday night.)

I knew him then, when we were co-workers at Bainbridge State Hospital where he exemplified the Golden Rule. His work ethic was absolute and his optimism contagious, but it was his kindness that set him apart.

I asked once what the secret was for his motivation.

He told me that he reminded himself daily that all life was precious and that disability can happen to anyone, anywhere, in the twinkling of an eye.

My favorite memory of him was watching as he ran beside a bicycle being pedaled by a 12-year-old client who would never have known this joy without Darnell’s strong arms to catch him if needed.

As a matter of fact, he was there for everyone at Bainbridge State Hospital if needed. We could count on him then, you can count on him now.
