Traffic stop leads to chase

Published 4:35 pm Friday, January 16, 2009

A routine traffic stop by local law enforcement turned into a brief manhunt near Climax Wednesday night.

State Trooper 1st Class J.F. Jackson said he and Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Logue were patrolling U.S. 84 East around 10 p.m. when they saw a driver not wearing his seat belt. Trooper Jackson followed the driver and turned on his patrol car’s flashing lights, but the driver kept going eastbound on the highway.

A short distance east of the site of the new Bainbridge High School, the driver slowed down and exited his car. He then fled toward a wooded area off the highway’s north shoulder, with Jackson and Deputy Logue in close pursuit on foot.

Despite an extensive search with the aid of Logue’s tracking dog, Koti, Bainbridge Public Safety officers and Sheriff’s deputies, the fleeing driver was unable to be found. Officers went to a Dothan Road residence listed in the car’s tag registration, but were unable to locate or positively identify the suspect.

Disturbing awakening

A Bainbridge woman was arrested after breaking in a window in the middle of the night and attacking a woman she said owed her money.

On Jan. 10, shortly before 4 a.m. Bainbridge Public Safety officers responded to an apartment at 912 N. Sims St. The woman at the residence told police she awoke to the sounds of Catherine Perkins, 36, of 104 Love St. in Bainbridge, yelling outside her window. Perkins then broke the window and climbed inside the woman’s bedroom and started hitting her on her head saying, “Give me my money.”

Another witness said he saw Perkins leave the home heading toward Sims Street.

Using descriptions given, officers located Perkins shortly before 5 a.m. and charged her with disorderly conduct. It was noted in the incident report that she smelled strongly of alcohol and may have been on drugs due to her incoherent speech. She was informed that other charges would follow for criminal trespass, due to her being banned from Housing Authority property, and simple assault, according to incident reports.

Herbicides stolen

More than $2,000 worth of herbicides were reported stolen from a local farm.

On Dec. 19, an employee of P.G.C. Farm located on Yates Spring Road in Brinson, Ga., reported a burglary. The employee showed Decatur County Sheriff’s deputies a broken chain on the properties chemical building. It was reported that 24 jugs of liquid herbicide were stolen from the building with the estimated value of $2,243.
