Deer, ducks and pickles

Around the time you read this riten, deer season will go out at legal sunset on Thursday.

However, duck season will go on until the 25th of January. I think goose season will go on until the end of the month.

This has been a bumper year for big deer. Russell Smith’s son, Eric, killed a huge buck this week. A lady popped an 11-point midweek, and two men Sunday morning hunting with David Avant put two nice bucks in ice water.

In the early days of BASS, Ray Scott did his own weigh-in, the Whitfield Pickle Company was one of his biggest sponsors. He would ask the contestants to bet him he couldn’t repeat the following jingle, “Whitfield Pickle, the pickle with the perfect pucker, picked at the peak of perfection, by pickle picken people.” He would win his dollar most of the time.

Bass bedded down and laid eggs in December or late November, bass frie was found in three beds early this week.

It is also noted that crappie is laying eggs in some places. They are easy to catch with minnows when they are laying.

We have seen an 11.2-ounce bass taken on a trick worm. Gale Goodman, one of the owners of Wingate’s, finally took some time to go fishen with Paul Tyre and took a 5-pound bass on live bait, John and David Moore of Valdosta got a nice catch and Matt Beaty had a good mess of Bass up to 7 pounds.

It is the honest opinion that the powers that be miscounted the canvasbacks this year. There’s more than we’ve ever had.
