The local Future Farmers of America (FFA) recently made a $642 donation to the Bainbridge-Decatur County Humane Society.

Members of the FFA from Hutto and West Bainbridge middle schools chose to support the Humane Society as one of their community projects.

As a fun way to raise money and support their cause, the group held a Christmas Charity Dance at the Cloud Livestock Facility off Vada Road. Each FFA member brought a guest to the dance. With more than 100 members in attendance, the money from admission and concessions went to helping their cause.

In addition, FFA members showed their support during the Bainbridge Christmas Parade, when they used their parade float to urge people to “opt to adopt” pets from the Humane Society.

On Saturday, Jan. 3, FFA members met at the Humane Society Animal Shelter to present the money to the society’s president, Pam Immendorf, and Shelter Director Beth Eck. Other donations provided by the group included blankets, collars, cat litter and shampoo.

“What you have brought us here can do so much, it’s amazing,” said Immendorf.

She explained that the funds from the FFA can feed 150 to 200 animals at the shelter for nearly a month. She said the money could also be used provide heart worm tests for more than 30 animals or spaying/neutering for approximately 13 animals.

“The outpouring of support since we hit a financial crisis is unbelievable,” Immendorf said.

The Humane Society ran into financial problems in fall of 2008, facing fears they would have to close its doors. After hiring Eck, the society’s former vice president, as shelter director and Pat Livingston as assistant shelter director, budget savings were made. The Humane Society also realized increased fund-raising like bingo nights, a skate party and T-shirt sales to help raise money to keep the shelter afloat.
