The Bainbridge Tree Committee met Dec. 16 considering three applications to remove trees from three non-residential properties.

The committee unanimously voted to allow the planners of a new Waffle House restaurant at 1320 E. Shotwell St. to remove one of two oak trees from the approximately half-acre property at 1320 E. Shotwell St., near the Bainbridge Mall.

The Waffle House’s agent had requested removal of both oaks to provide site and sign visibility; however, the committee only allowed the removal of the tree closest to the restaurant’s proposed sign, said City Planner Dustin Dowdy.

In other business, the committee unanimously voted to approve a request from Edward Reynolds, owner of Bainbridge Pharmacy, to remove seven pine trees on his property at 1420 E. Evans St. The trees’ removal will accommodate a planned expansion of the business’ parking lot. Reynolds, who is chairman of the Tree Committee, abstained from consideration of his request.

The committee decided to defer consideration of a request from First United Methodist Church to remove five camphor trees in the right of way along Florida Street on what was formerly known as the Jackson property. According to the church, the trees are dead or dying and thus unsightly.

Dowdy said the committee decided to let the Bainbridge City Council consider the request since the trees belong to the municipal government.
