Two Bearcats helped the South Georgia Senior All-Stars shutout the North Georgia Senior All-Stars 17-0 in a football game played Monday at Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ga.

Bainbridge High School Bearcats head football coach Ed Pilcher ran the South’s offense and Bearcats senior wide receiver Melzie Johnson saw play time.

The game, the North-South All-Star Football Classic, is sponsored by the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA), head coach of the South team was Bob Herndon of Benedictine High School in Savannah.

Greg Reid of the Lowndes County High School Vikings, a University of Florida recruit, scored both South touchdowns with a pair of punt returns of 89 and 78 yards.

David Clark of Warner Robins High School kicked the extra points after both touchdowns and added a 39-yard fourth quarter field goal.

Pilcher said the Bearcats’ Johnson had three good days of practice and a good game.

“We practiced once on Friday, twice on Saturday and twice on Sunday, and Melzie had strong efforts all three days,” Pilcher said referring to Johnson.

“In the game he drew a pass interference penalty in the second quarter. He got wide open on a play in the fourth quarter, but the quarterback did not get the ball to him. He was the first read on the play, but the quarterback must not have seen him.”

“We tried to gear the offense to the type players we had. We had Melzie and some other good receivers and some good quarterbacks, so we ran a wide open offense.”

Johnson, the Bearcats all-time receptions leader, has drawn interest from several NCAA Division I football programs.
