Syrupmakers State AAA champions

Senior quarterback Angelo Pease threw for two touchdowns and ran for another Saturday, leading the undefeated Cairo High School Syrupmakers to a 28-14 State Class AAA football championship victory over the Flowery Branch High School Falcons.

The Syrupmakers victory highlighted two days of state championship play at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

After falling behind 6-0 on 21-yard and 44-yard field goals by the Falcons Bill Thompson in the first and second quarters, the Syrupmakers came back to take a 7-6 halftime lead on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Pease to Dewayne Isom and an extra point kick by Logan Gainous.

The Syrupmakers went up 14-7 in the third quarter when Pease ran 78 yards for a touchdown, and Gainous kicked the extra point.

The Falcons pulled even 14-14 later in the third quarter when quarterback Connor Shaw threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to Chris Lipscomb then threw to Rodriquez Frazier for the two-point conversion.

A two fourth-quarter touchdown performance by the Syrupmakers sealed the victory. Pease threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to J.J. Wilcox and Reginald Bryant ran for 1 yard for a touchdown. Gainous kicked the extra point after both fourth-quarter scores.

In the Class AAAAA championship game, also on Saturday, Camden County defeated Peachtree Ridge 21-14, scoring the winning touchdown on a 1-yard third-quarter run by Darrell Williams.

In Saturday’s Class A championship game, sophomore running back Kyle Karempelis ran for two touchdowns and caught a pass from quarterback Conor Welton to lead Wesleyan to a 33-21 victory over Emanuel County Institute.

On Friday, Tucker defeated Marist 15-3 to win the Class AAAA championship, nailing it down on a Jonathan Davis fourth-quarter touchdown run.

Also on Friday, Buford defeated Calhoun 45-21 to win the AA championship. They were led by tailback Cody Getz, who picked up 233 yards on 23 carries and scored four touchdowns.
