A Bainbridge woman died in a single-vehicle crash Wednesday evening, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The wreck happened shortly before 7 p.m. on Georgia 97 South, approximately a mile north of the Georgia-Florida border.

The victim, 41-year-old Sheila Yvonne Griffin, was headed south on the highway when she apparently lost control of her Ford Explorer and it ran off the roadway’s west shoulder, said Trooper 1st Class J.F. Jackson of the GSP’s Colquitt post.

After leaving the roadway, the SUV overturned in a ditch, vaulted over an embankment and came to rest on its roof, Trooper Jackson said. A nearby resident heard the crash and called 911.

Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Cox and county firefighter Jerry Hatcher cut the victim’s seat belt to free her, but she was found to be deceased.

Emergency Medical Service personnel, Decatur County Fire and Rescue, the Sheriff’s Office and the Recovery Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the accident.

Griffin lived in Bainbridge for two months, moving from Tallahassee, Fla.
