Published Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Coach Latreisha Moon’s Bainbridge High School Lady Cats basketball team continued their top early season roll with three victories in four days over the weekend.

The team, which is 5-0 for the season, began the weekend by posting 61-41 and 73-57 Friday and Saturday victories over the East Gadsden High School Lady Jaguars from Quincy, Fla., and Rickards High School Lady Raiders from Tallahassee, Fla., in the Rickards Shootout.

They returned home Monday and defeated the Randolph-Clay High School Lady Red Devils 77-69 at the new Bainbridge High School Gymnasium.

In their Friday Rickards Shootout win over East Gadsden, post Alexis Burke led the way with a team-high 40 points. April Thomas added 6.

Burke and Thomas again led the way, topping a balanced scoring attack in Saturday’s win over Rickards. Burke again led the way with 31 while Thomas pumped in 14. Brianna Wade and Bria Harris scored 9 apiece for the Lady Cats.

Monday night’s home game with Randoilph-Clay was close throughout.

The Lady Red Devils grabbed the early lead, jumping out front 4-0 on a jumper from the right side and a layup off the left glass by Destiny Mitchell, who led all scorers with 53 points, at the 6:55 and 6:36 marks.

Burke and Thomas shared scoring honors for the Lady Cats with 26 apiece.

Burr’s driving layup off the right glass with 5:20 showing on the first-half clock to quickly cut it to 4-2. She then tied it up 4-4 with a rebound and stick back at the 4:44 mark.

The Lady Cats took their first lead at 17-16 when Bria Harris opened the second quarter with a layup off the left glass. They were down 34-31 at halftime.

The Lady Cats pulled even 38-38 when Burke hit a driving layup off the right glass with 6:11 left in the game. They went ahead to stay 45-42 when Thomas hit a three-point jumper from the right baseline with 3:33 left in the game.

The Lady Cats will return to action Friday when they host the Thomasville High School Lady Bulldogs at 6 p.m. They will host Enterprise, Ala., High School Saturday at 6 p.m.
