Letter to the editor in reference in the plane crash in Decatur County

Recently, a Twin Engine Aircraft crashed on my property in Decatur County. The aircraft was based out of Lakeland, Florida, and both the pilot and co-pilot lost their lives in the accident.

I was notified personally by Decatur County Sheriff Wiley Griffin. Sheriff Griffin explained the crash site has been located and he and his people were at the crash site and there were no survivors.

We agreed to meet at the crash site. Upon arrival, I was immediately impressed with the perimeter setup by Sheriff Griffin’s staff. He introduced me to his onsite staff and explained the agencies (FAA, Coroner, etc.) involved and the scenario of what to expect in regards to accident investigation and aircraft salvage/removal. I explained to Sheriff Griffin I was departing on a trip the next day. Sheriff Griffin stated that he would ensure the crash site would be secured. I feel compelled to mention the members of the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department and the Climax Volunteer Fire Department excelled in the performance of their duties. I am proud to be a landowner in Decatur County and to have a local government display the overall professionalism that was exhibited during this unfortunate event.
