Hollis Bower McDonald of Fairhope, Alabama, passed away on August 29, 2015. Hollis spent her childhood in Florence, Alabama. She received in 1964 a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. Hollis was a loving mother to her children in Newport, Arkansas. She settled in Fairhope in 1997. Hollis opened the ladies apparel and jewelry store High Strung, volunteered weekly at the Mitchell Cancer Institute in Mobile and helped the Honor Flight celebrate our veterans. She was a longtime member of P.E.O. and the Wisteria Garden Club. Hollis loved dressing for a party, decorating her home, tending to flowers and individual blades of grass in her yard, walking the Eastern Shore, traveling with new and longtime friends, and spending “Sugar” time with her grandchildren.  She had the unique gift of bringing style and elegance to every situation.

Hollis is preceded in death by her parents, Byron Buxton Bower, III, and Virginia Marie Hollis Bower of Florence. She is survived by her brother, Byron Buxton Bower, IV, and sister, Evirgiline (“Eve”) Conway Bower, both of Florence; her children, Justin Toby McDonald (Virginia) of Birmingham, and Eve McDonald Boger (William) of Nashville; and six grandchildren, Alex Garland Boger, Ella Hastings McDonald, George Toby McDonald, Benjamin McDonald Boger, Jackson Hollis Boger and Florence Qiuru Boger.

A service was held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Chapel in Magnolia Springs, Alabama, at 2 p.m. on Monday, August 31. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Chapel, 14755 Oak Street, Magnolia Springs, Alabama 36555.
