Jimmy Murrel Murphy, 68, of Smyrna, Ga., and formerly of Moultrie, died Saturday, August 15, 2015 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at Cobb Funeral Chapel in Moultrie, with the Rev. Stanley Matthew Blount officiating. Interment will follow in Cobb Suncrest Memorial Gardens.

Casketbearers will be Jonathan Murphy, Ken Spires, Jonathan Spires, Jacob Blount, Rantz  Murphy and Mark Murphy.

Born November 23, 1946 in Moultrie, he was the son of the late Jarvis Grady Murphy and Eunice Marie Lowry Murphy.  He attended Riverside Elementary School and was a 1966 graduate of Moultrie High School.  He was a retired paraprofessional with the Decatur County School System with 25 years of service, and also the Cobb County School System with five years of service.  He also served as a bus driver.  He was a member of Ochlocknee Church of God and was a former member of Moultrie Church of God.  “He was a faithful husband, father, fisherman and friend,” his family remembered.  “He adored his grandchildren and was known as “Pop Pop” and “Poppy”.”

He was preceded in death by one brother, David Murphy.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Hand Murphy of Smyrna; three children, Jimmy M. Murphy, Jr. and Mendi of Chattanooga, Tenn., Angela Ellen Blount and Stan of Brinson, Ga. and Joel S. Murphy of Cleveland, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Bliss Murphy, Julia Murphy, Jonathan Blount, Jacob Blount and Jerek Blount; three brothers, Russell Murphy and Sandra of Leesburg, Donnie Murphy of Bainbridge and Marvin Murphy of Easley, S.C.; six sisters, Barbara Snell of Auburndale, Fla., Marie Baker and Fred of Thomasville, Janie Reynolds of Sale City, Juanita Schell of Lizella, Evon Bizzell and Denny of Keysville, Ga. and Myra Murphy of Miami, Fla.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service on Wednesday at Cobb Funeral Chapel.
