Bainbridge High School junior varsity Bearcats midfielder Joey Mathis kicked in a goal from the left side from five yards out with just over three minutes remaining Monday at Centennial Field to avert a shut out against the Thomasville High School junior varsity Bulldogs, who downed the Bearcats 7-1
Bearcats coach Chris Jackson, who played at Thomas University and Andrew College following his Bearcats soccer career, said the Bulldogs grabbed the momentum early in the game and kept applying the pressure.
“Thomasville was obviously strong offensively and kept the pressure on our goal keeper throughout the game, but they were also strong defensively,” Jackson said. “Joey Mathis was able to weave his way through several defenders to score our goal. He was determined to get to the goal and score and would not be denied. That is a credit to his great hustle and desire.”
The middle school Bearcats will return to action Monday, March 9, when they host the Northview High School Cougars from Dothan, Alabama, at 7:30 p.m. They will travel to Cairo Wednesday, March 18, to take on the Cairo High School junior varsity Syrupmakers at 5:45 p.m. in their final match of the season.
