Coach Brian McCorkle’s Bainbridge High School Bearcats baseball team will open their season against the Dothan (Ala.) High School Tigers on Monday at 4 p.m. at Bearcat Field.

They tuned up for the opener with a Thursday scrimmage game against the Valdosta High School Wildcats, in Valdosta, Ga. The seven-inning game ended in a 0-0 tie.

“We did some good things in the scrimmage game yesterday,”McCorkle said Friday morning. “We pitched well and played solid defense, but we left too many runners on base in scoring position.”

McCorkle also discussed his tentative starting lineup for Monday’s opener with Dothan.

“Our lineup will be junior- and senior-dominated,” he said. “We will have senior Jake Goodson at first base, senior Ryals Smith or junior Grant McDonald at second base, junior Ben Day at shortstop and senior Jackson Jones at third base.

“Our outfield will have senior Michael Faircloth in left, junior Shawon Gardner in center and junior Jordan Davis in right.

“The probable starting pitcher is junior left hander Tate Lambert. Blake Voyles, our starting senior catcher, signed a baseball scholarship in November with Jacksonville’s University of North Florida Ospreys.”

Last season, Voyles had three singles, 10 doubles and a home run, and drove in 14 runs, on the way to winning the John Hambrick Batting Average Award. The award is named for a former Bearcat who lost his life in a drowning accident.
