The BHS Varsity Competition Cheerleaders placed fourth in the Regional 5-AAAAA Finals on Saturday, Nov. 3.

Their placement in the Region Competition will allow BHS to advance to the GHSA State Cheer Sectionals on Friday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m., to be held at the Columbus Civic Center. This is the first year in a very long time for Bainbridge cheerleaders to advance to the State Cheer Meet, BHS Varsity Cheerleading Coach Lea Hawkins said.

“I am very proud of our cheerleaders — all 24 of the BHS girls have worked very hard to attain this level of performance,” Hawkins said. “Our participation at the state level in 2012 is proof that we have the local ability and talent to compete at higher level.”

Hawkins has been coaching cheerleading in the Decatur County School system since 2009 when she became the cheer sponsor at the newly organized Bainbridge Middle School. It is the fourth consecutive year that she has assisted in coaching the current high school juniors.

“My girls are champions, no matter what the score sheet says,” Hawkins said. “They have rallied under a tremendous amount of adversity. Plus, it’s homecoming, and they can do it all.”

If BHS places in the top eight of the 24 Georgia teams in the AAAAA sectionals, Bainbridge will advance to the state finals which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Columbus Civic Center.
