Pilcher: penalties, mistakes doomed Bearcats

Wide receiver Greg Cooper catches a pass from quarterback Preston Norris during last Friday night's game.

Bainbridge High School Bearcats head football coach Ed Pilcher said Monday that he was disappointed by his team’s Friday night performance in a 21-17 Region 1-AAAAA road loss to the Harris County High School Tigers.

“All week in practice we talked about how dangerous Harris County could be,” Pilcher said. “We had not played them for four years, so our current players did not remember playing them.

“Our offensive line jumped offsides several times, and that is just usually due to a lack of concentration. Defensively, we could not consistently stop their wide-open offense on third or fourth down.”

Bearcats senior running back Terry Lewis did not play until the fourth quarter. Senior running back Michael Stubbs led the Bearcats in rushing with nine carries for 114 yards and a touchdown, and senior quarterback Damian Bouie and 15 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown.

“The only thing I want to say about Terry Lewis’s limited playing time is that it had to do with discipline,” Pilcher said. “I did think that running back Tremain McCray, who played early, ran the ball well.

“Having lost two tough tight Region 1-AAAAA games to Thomas County Central and Harris County the past two weeks and with our region record standing at 0-2, Friday night’s game with Hardaway of Columbus and our final two Region 1-AAAAA games with Northside-Columbus on Friday, Oct. 26, on the road, and Lee County on Friday, Nov. 9 at home, are basically ‘must-wins.’”
