Bearcats defeat Pelham, 63-48

Coach Rickey McCullough’s Bainbridge High School Bearcats improved their record to 19-4 Tuesday night, with a 63-48 road victory over the Pelham High School Hornets.

They were led by guard Dontavius Marshall, who had a game-high 17 points. Also breaking into the double-figure column were forward Rodney Glenn with 14, forward Trea Kelly with 12 and forward Paul Chukes with 10.

Steve Mayo scored 14 points to lead the Hornets.

The Bearcats took command early, building a 19-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. They outscored the Hornets 7-2 in the second quarter to walk off with a 26-12 halftime lead.

The Bearcats increased their lead to 49-30, after they outscored the Hornets 23-18 in the third quarter. The Hornets outscored the Bearcats 18-14 in the fourth quarter.

Coach McCullough said he liked his team’s intensity against Pelham.

“We really got after them on defense last night,” he said Wednesday morning. “We just need to keep playing hard.”

The Bearcats returned to action Friday, hitting the road for a Region 1-AAAA game with the Thomas County-Central High School Yellow Jackets.

They return home tonight for a 7:30 p.m. game against the Cairo High School Syrupmakers.

Their regular season will conclude with a Tuesday, Feb. 7, region game against the Lee County High School Trojans in Leesburg, Ga., and and a Friday, Feb. 10, home “Senior Night” game against the Randolph-Clay High School Red Devils.

The Region 1-AAAA Tournament will be Tuesday, Feb. 14, through Saturday, Feb. 18, at Northside-Columbus High School.
