Third-graders explore habitats

Grant money from the Decatur County Schools Foundation made it possible for West Bainbridge Elementary third-graders to explore the Flint RiverQuarium in neighboring Albany, Ga. The students were able to observe many of the animals and plants that are indigenous to Georgia. The highlight of the trip for the students was the opportunity to visit “Moonshine,” which is an albino alligator on loan from a museum in Dubuque, Iowa. The alligator has a rare genetic condition in which pigment melanin is absent. This ghostly guest has pink eyes and is easily sunburned. He is 4 1/2 feet long and weighs 17 pounds.
